Abi Huxtable
Oh Rats!
18 July - 23 August 2020

Abi Huxtable presents a new series of paintings created at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Amidst the lockdown Huxtable discovered that according to Chinese astrology it is the year of the rat. She uses the animal as a central motif throughout the paintings as way to explore not only the language of painting but her feelings surrounding the pandemic. The title of the show reflects Huxtable’s own uncertain response to the situation, as both an exclamation of frustration and paradoxically, joy.

The aesthetic and forms alter from painting to painting, but each originates from a drawing. These are either free associative doodles or naturalistic copies from found imagery. The references reflecting her broad range of interests from Eastern philosophies to cave paintings.

Abi Huxtable graduated in a MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London in 2017. She has appeared in group shows in London, East of England and internationally since 2015. Her studio is based in Unit 8, Studio TB-124.
