Robin Greenwood

This memorial exhibition for Robin Greenwood (1950-2023), shows steel sculptures and paintings, many on display for the first time outside Greenwood’s studio. Greenwood played a significant role in the promotion and discussion of abstract art in London and internationally. Co-founder of Poussin Gallery, he was instrumental in the running of the website and discussion forum Abstract Critical.

Poussin Gallery (2005-2012), based in Bermondsey Street, showed a largely neglected generation of abstract painters and sculptors. Poussin was responsible for the revival of interest in the work of the New Zealand/UK sculptor John Panting. It hosted solo exhibitions for artists including Frank Bowling, Alan Gouk, Mali Morris and Tim Scott.

Abstract Critical published hundreds of articles, reviews and commentaries between 2011 and 2015, as well as hosting events, sponsoring exhibitions, and awarding an art prize. It was co-founded by Greenwood, along with John Pluthero. The website gained a reputation for lively, serious and sometimes fractious debate. Following its closure, Greenwood ran a blog Abcrit.org, which following Covid he turned into an IRL gallery largely showing a young generation of abstract painters.

Curated by Sam Cornish, the exhibition shows sculpture and painting by Greenwood from the early 1980s until 2022, with a concentration on recent steel sculptures. Greenwood’s steel sculptures are spatially and physical complex, dynamic and ambitious. The spreading horizontals in his work of the late 90s and early 2000s, led to an exploration of what he called ‘micro-content’ in the last years of his life. They are powerful examples of late modernist abstract sculpture.

A memorial publication is available with contributions by Frank Bowling, John Bunker, Graham Burke, Sam Cornish, EC, Garth Evans, Alex Harley, Peter Hide, Jock Ireland, John Pluthero, Tim Scott, Anne Smart, Tony Smart, Emyr Williams.
