Lasercut.London recreates a 16th Century Ruff for National Maritime Museum

Chris McGee of Lasercut.London (7-002/003) recently worked with National Maritime Museum in Greenwich to recreate a 16th century ruff based on the infamous Armada Portrait painting of Queen Elizabeth I (1588) formerly attributed to painter George Gower.

Working with costume designer Oliver Cronk, Chris had the task of designing the cut files to create and interpret a modern version of the ruff. As it's to be worn at a series of live events it needed to be durable but remain highly detailed. Thinking beyond the normal materials, Chris used 0.5mm Trolase thins using a white front and black back for high contrast. The project has filled Chris with a renewed enthusiasm for costume design and history. Follow Lasercut.London on Instagram here
