About Alex Beattie

I am a visual artist and printmaker. I produce my work in paper and textiles, using a range of hand-based print techniques including lithography, silkscreen and etching.

I create mythical dreamscapes and queer utopias, full of vivid colour. I do this by weaving together hand-drawn images of things which are meaningful and beloved to me. Some of them exist. Some used to exist, but are now lost. Some have never existed outside of my own mind, but they are precious and I want them to be seen.

I draw on the bright, urgent graphics of consumer products, the pomp and glamour of organised religion and the promised utopias of socialist poster art. I use those visual languages to tell new stories about who we are and who we might be. Celestial gardens of myth and wonder, death and renewal.

My print processes are manual and painstaking. I slowly build up each image from multiple hand-printed layers, to produce worlds resplendent in glorious, saturated, hyperreal colour.
