About J Yuen Ling Chiu

Ling is a London-based printmaker and artist educator, from Toronto, Canada. Her work explores the architecture and pattern of memory, with especial attention to relationships between urban landscapes, migration, and empire. Her studio practice often shifts between themes, underpinned by a formal exploration of the medium of printmaking.

Thames-side Print Studio is proud to present her newest body of work, ‘Improvisations’. Plant matter collected during her daily commute along the Thames Path is deeply etched into large steel plates using acrylic grounds and saline sulphate solution. The plates are printed in small editions, and then form a library of imagery, surface and texture that can be used over and over again. These improvisations are developed directly on the press and result in unique prints in sequence, a composition that is practiced and changed with each performance, akin to music as much as art.

Researching lower-toxicity and more sustainable processes, Ling’s new work reflects on the changing nature of printmaking, its environmental impact, and the effects of the climate crisis on artistic practice.
